Ending a relationship is never easy. When you feel you must end a relationship most people find it challenging as they have feelings towards their partner and do not wish to hurt them.

More often than not, breaking up is as hard on the person ending the relationship as it is on the person being broken up with. Realize that a person is breaking up has nothing to do with caring about another person. Caring about somebody and wanting a relationship are not the same.

The majority of people on this planet do not like to hurt others, especially somebody they have been close to. Guilt has been used more often than not to keep relationships together. Fight this urge and believe in yourself.! When you allow guilt as a way to stop a break up you not only cheat yourself out of having a good and true relationship, you’ll foster resentment towards the other person which could lead to greater pain and heart ache in the future. Why would you want to be with somebody who makes you feel bad by allowing you to feel guilty? Respect yourself!!.

A man should exit gracefully by planning the break up, to minimize the grief caused to his partner

Don’t just ignore her hoping she will notice and go away. You might have learned a little bit about push /pull as a term we use in seduction. That only tends to bring somebody in closer. Which is the exact opposite of what you want.

. The I think you’re a great girl and I don’t deserve you line will seem ok to her at first, but later on she will start to resent that. She could also go into how you DO deserve her and try to convince you.

Honesty really is the best policy. Treating the relationship, and the person, with respect and dignity helps soften the blow.

When you break up, Do it in person. Show some integrity and sincerity to tell her that the relationship isn’t’t going anywhere.

In our workshops we teach how verbal communication is only 7% of the total communication between people. If she also sees closed off body language it will be easier for closure for her eventually.

Telling somebody you are breaking up in person is never easy, but you owe it to her to break the news to her personally. This means not on the phone, definitely not over e-mail, but rather, face to face where she can get eye contact and read your body language. The universal line of “ we need to talk.” should be given in advance. This allows her to prepare for what is coming and helps soften the blow a little bit. Do not put too much time between the “We need to talk” and actual breakup as the waiting time in between is very uncomfortable if delayed long.

On doing some research on this I read a suggestion about breaking up in the exact same place you met if possible. This is to suggest that the relationship has completed a circle. A place where she has a lot of happy memories might help neutralize some of the new sad ones.

Ending a relationship gracefully means speaking our piece without blame or judgment and not taking responsibility for another’s feelings. It is important to make eye contact, and give body language that is open while you are communicating (which suggests you are VERY open to what you are saying) than give closed off body language after finishing your piece. To suggest you are not open to hearing anything else. Say your words sincerely, leave no room for doubt, and never back down- especially when she starts to cry and you feel horrible.

Than give that person some space usually a few months at least. Do not try to get cozy with the person as this can really mess with somebody’s head a lot as they will use this as hope that you are getting back together. This is the only way to keep pain to a minimum when ending a relationship.

Google finally dropped the bombshell on affiliate marketers. Their was a lot of speculation in the affiliate marketing community if they would actually go through with it. Well, they finally did.

In case some of you reading this don’t know what I’m talking about; Google no longer allows affiliates using adwords to send traffic directly to the merchants website. Affiliates will now have to send traffic to their own sites first. This is going to make a lot of affiliates angry because now they have to go through the extra work of creating web pages.

Personally, I welcome the change. Affiliates who don’t want to take the time to set up their own web pages will stop using adwords. This in turn will make keyword cost cheaper and get your google ads a higher position.

Some people thought that Google would be losing money as a result of the new rule.

I don’t think so. The number of Google ads will decrease as some affiliate marketers leave, but the ads that remain will probably get clicked on more often than they did in the past. Which means more traffic for those webmasters..

One of the main reasons Google implemented the changes is so their adword results were more relevant. It doesn’t make much sense for each ad to point to the same website from a searchers perspective. But, this could backfire on Google. Affiliates could simply create their own web pages and send visitors to the same site anyways.

I’ve been using adwords for about two years now and its interesting to see how things change as time rolls on.

The #1 Most Common Goof Businesses MakeWith Their Yellow Pages Display Ads

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But, when itcomes to yellow page display ads, you better know who you’reimitating and why!

A yellow page ad is supposed to do one primary thing: get peopleto call your business. If it’s a really good ad, it should getpeople to mentally discount competitor ads and favor yours.

If a particular business wants to garner the lion’s share of allprospects, then why imitate the format of all the other ads?More importantly, why imitate an image-style format?

Let’s look at an example of an image-style format. The namesays it all. “Image” is everything (and maybe the only thing, for lack of anything better to say). Coca-Cola has an image.IBM has an image. So does Citi Bank.

These Fortune 500 Companies also have enormous advertisingbudgets that would dwarf annual revenues of most individualbusinesses. They’re the big players. Having massivedistribution networks and established prominence, their productsand services are virtually everywhere.

They can afford continuing, expensive image ads simply becauseof their immense size and the marketing inertia they’vedeveloped over multiple decades.

Is it any wonder that their brand name stands alone on abillboard? Not that a billboard ad of this type will generatecommensurate revenue. It’s just part of the overall brand-building strategy. That strategy says this: If the name isout in public often enough, long enough, and in a large enoughway, people will develop some kind of awareness.

And, in the future, people will consider doing business withthe company when the product or service need becomes necessary. It’s a “feel good”, “hope you’ll think of us” awarenessphilosophy.

If you’re a small to medium-sized business, you don’t need”awareness”. You need leads and sales. You need ACTION.

Open your yellow pages phone book. Look under any major listingcategory and take notice of the headlines in the display ads.The majority of headlines are simply the name of the company- - - Ajax Roofing, John’s Carpet Cleaning, Green Thumb TreeService.

The company name is the bold headline.

Is there anything intrinsically compelling about the words “AjaxRoofing”? Does the company name as a headline provide any hintof decision-facilitating information?

If not, have you seen Ajax Roofing signs and ads on every streetcorner and heard constant and ongoing Ajax radio and TVcommercials over the course of 20, 40, or 60 years? Of coursenot. Then why imitate the mass market saturation methods ofbrand builder image advertisers by using your company name asyour ad’s headline?

Instead, your headline needs to snap prospects out of their”conscious-sleep” mental state. It should be something thattruly interrupts the attention of your prospect. It must tapinto your prospect’s emotional hot buttons that deals with theirproblems, frustrations, and annoyances.

As a headline in a display ad, “The Five Biggest Problems WhenBuying A Fence” is much more appealing than “Fred’s Fencing.”If I were in the market for a new fence, I’d certainly like toknow what those five problems are.

I would want to educate myself as much as possible before Icommit. I would want to avoid making a mistake. I would wantto make an informed choice and get the right fence that suitsmy situation.

I really don’t care what the name of the company is. I justwant to know about the five biggest problems. And, because thisad is the only one that addresses some of the burning issueswhen buying a fence, I’ll call this ad first, and perhapssolely.

Make your yellow pages ad headline functional. Interrupt theattention of your prospect. There are a number of ways to dothis as discussed in the MYM On Demand Program.

However, knowing what you now know, you’re already well on yourway to a more effective ad when you avoid imitating yourcompetitors and image advertisers - - - when you avoid usingyour company name as the headline.

Good luck with your marketing efforts!

We all know by now that content is king. In order to effectively market your products or services and to establish yourself as a leader in your industry, writing and distributing articles is the way to go. One of the primary benefits of getting your content rich articles indexed in the search engines is so that you can increase your websites’ overall PageRank, while continuing to build exposure for your company.

Here are a few tips to get you started in the right direction:

Add popular keyword phrases in your article- When writing your article, make sure to include popular keyword phrases in your headline, subheads and summary of your article. Make sure your site uses these words too. Placing these keywords and search terms may help prospects and the press identify your article when they run a search in the major news feeds.

Include your website link - Whether it is in the author’s byline or in the body of the article, if you are going to write an article, make sure to include your website link within the article. This is the best way to get inbound links from other websites, without having to return the favor.

Submit to PRWeb and other newswires - Journalists increasingly rely on major search engines for their research. In order to get your press release found, indexed and ranked, you may want to consider submitting to an article distribution service like PR Web. PR Web sends press releases to major news search engines, including Google News and Yahoo News. Press releases distributed through PR Web are optimized for maximum organic search engine inclusion. Search engines can then crawl naturally and efficiently to index your press release.

Additional article distribution services:
www.thephantomwriters.com
www.marketingsource.com

Identify the best websites for your article - After optimizing your article, identify which websites to submit your article to. There are hundreds, if not thousands of publishers that are looking for quality content to publish. It is best to find high traffic websites that have the target audience you are looking for.

To find these sites, simply perform a search in Google by placing relevant terms like “article submission” or “article directory” in the search box. For instance, if you are writing a self-help article, type the term “self-help articles” and target the websites that are on the first few pages of the search engine.

Article announcement lists - Announcement Lists are newsletters, groups or ezines, which allow you to “announce” your new articles to thousands of editors and publishers instantly. Most of these announcement lists are sent out daily to their subscribers. This means that you can have your article circulating to key editors and publishers within hours of completion.

Here are a few Article Announcement Lists that may distribute your article:

http://topica.com/lists/freeezinecontent/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/article_announce/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Free-Reprint-Articles/

Become a contributing writer - If you are you an accomplished or aspiring writer with something to contribute, you might consider becoming a contributing writer for an online community. Typically, you do not get paid for your work but the amount of exposure you get is invaluable. You also get credit for your article including a free link to your email address and your website!

Here are a few good web properties to consider writing for:
Suite101.com
About.com

In sum, writing and distributing articles is one of the most promising ways to boost your site’s ranking in the search engines. In the process, you also benefit from building quality links to your site, gaining an editorial following and most importantly, sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world!

Some naysayers way back in the 1990s predicted that online shopping wouldn’t last. Sure, and they said television was a passing fad, too! As we all know, just the opposite has occurred. There’s a television in every household, and more than likely, the homeowner bought their television online-along with his books, music CDs, clothes, and maybe even his home.

Internet shopping is bigger than ever. You can find anything and everything for sale online. Many times, you can find it cheaper online than anywhere else. Internet shopping offers so much more than a discounted price tag, though.

Imagine a shopping mall where there are no lines, where there are no jammed parking garages, and no pushy sales clerks. This is no land of make believe. It is the Internet, where you can discover unprecedented selection, convenience, and opportunities. Online shopping gives you the luxury of browsing hundreds of stores from your living room, while saving on time and frustration. It provides you the chance to compare prices to your heart’s delight on a near limitless selection of brands and models.

For even more benefits, try your hand at classifieds and auction Web sites. These sites are like yard sales and flea markets rolled into one. Unlike retail shopping sites, they offer:

Access to super secondary markets. Take your pick of secondhand or brand-new wholesale goods at steeply discounted prices. The vendors at classifieds sites can get away with it because they aren’t paying high rent for a storefront or a warehouse. And in many cases, you’re not paying taxes.

Tools to locate unique and rare collectibles. Imagine a classifieds site to be like a sunken pirate boat, laden with cultural artifacts, hard-to-find heirlooms, and priceless antiques. The Internet is your deep-sea vessel, sonar, and oxygen tank all in one.

Reach beyond your neighborhood. Search through the inventory of a vendor from your home town, or if you don’t find what you’re looking for there, try that fellow in California, Texas or Canada for that matter.

Close relationships with vendors. You deal with real people-not big, impersonal corporations-when you buy on classifieds sites.

They can provide more details about the product, which you can then use to bargain for a reasonable price.

Despite this bounty of benefits, you might still be hesitant to dive into Internet shopping. Don’t be embarrassed. You have good reason to take your time and weigh your choices. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Internet fraud tops the list of the thousands of fraud cases that happen every year. In some ways, WWW could stand for the Wild West Web, in that anything goes. Vendors can be villains in disguise, and there aren’t any online Wyatt Earps to protect you from these bad guys. You’re on your own.

But give yourself some credit. You have the common sense it takes to survive the WWW. It is the same commonsense that helps you make the most of your money on your standard shopping trips. Become familiar and comfortable with an online vendor before jumping into a purchase. Ask questions and do a bit of research.

After doing your research, you’ll feel more confident in searching for your online booty. To refine your findings and whittle your list to only the exceptional sites, look for these additional qualities:

•A focus on local shopping, so you can feel more confident buying from neighbors.
•Free education and advice on safe purchasing.
•No-cost and easy browsing through available merchandise.
•Search tools that let you prioritize items by category, location, and distance.
•A straightforward pricing system that avoids the haggling and risk of auction bidding.
•Quick price comparisons among different vendors.

Unbelievably, a few trustworthy, practical, and exciting Web sites exist that have all of these features. To find these websites, simply browse through Yahoo’s directory under the classifieds category. The best of the online classified sites offer these services free to buyers such as you. Some of these sites can link you at no charge to your neighbor selling the antique lamp that you’ve been hunting for or that retiree looking to unload an incredible piece of real estate-or the cowboy looking to sell his big-screen television.

You had a great idea when you decided to open a home-based Internet retail business. You became a “power seller”. as people in the online retail business world call you. Your goal is to move tons of merchandise through Web auction sites and classifieds services without ever leaving the comfort of your home office. Drop shipping gives you the opportunity to accomplish your dreams and more. The sky is the limit if you know how to get your business off the
ground.

Drop shipping can launch your business into successful orbit, but it isn’t rocket science. With this unique way of doing business, you enlist the services of a wholesale merchandise company. The wholesale company takes care of the stockpiling and storing of your product. It even covers the shipping and handling charges when one of your customers orders an item.

This means you don’t have to rent thousands of square feet to warehouse your inventory, and you’re free from the liability that comes with direct delivery to your customers. Your only expenses are the membership fee of your particular wholesaler, along with the fees and percentages you lose to advertising and auctioning online. If you play your cards right with these fees, you can build yourself a very cost-effective-and most importantly, profitable-home based business.

Experienced online retailers have learned the tricks of the trade to do just that. Here are the key secrets that they, your competitors, don’t want you to know. These three tips will stack the deck in your favor, helping you to grow your clientele while avoiding the pitfalls of doing ecommerce.

Get sold on your wholesaler. Nowadays, wholesalers are a dime a dozen, so don’t settle on the first one that comes your way. Let wholesalers compete for your business, instead of the other way around. Many companies may offer specials to new prospective retailers. They may waive the minimum order requirements, credit check, and prepayments if you sign up with them. Top-notch wholesalers could also offer international delivery or special net payment options. Avoid high expenses at the get-go by taking advantage of such specials, and turn a profit a lot quicker.

Sniff out whole-scammers. For every honest wholesaler looking to build a successful relationship with you, there’s a crook out there looking to do nothing but build his bank account at your expense.

Avoid any wholesaler, for instance, who demands you pay an advance fee before you sign up with them. Be wary of wholesalers who claim to have thousands of items in their selection. These might not be wholesalers at all, but middlemen who are trying to bluff you. Instead of actually stocking these thousands of products, they actually buy them from a wholesaler, or another middleman, and resell them to you at a jacked up price, thereby cutting into your profits.

Get wired to the Web wisely. You now have a trusted Wholesaler and outstanding products to move, but so do thousands of other Internet retailers. How can you stand out to attract customers and save money doing so? One way to make a mark online is to design and write your own ads for your products. Many wholesalers provide complimentary stock product photos and descriptions that you can use in your online ads and classifieds. Then again, they provide the same thing to all their retailers. Most retailers use them. So you shouldn’t.

Another effective way to sell on the Web is to find new and innovative sites to sell on. The main auction sites are often crowded with retailers who are eager to undercut your prices. Plus, these auctioning sites tend to have high fees and shorter listing durations. Avoid competition and high prices by trying the next generation of premiere selling sites, such as free online classified sites.

Free online classifieds services work as powerful avenues to sell your goods. They offer attractive features your business needs to take off, such as:

•No sign-up, registration, or transaction fees.

•Free listing (text description and image upload).

•Up to 60-day ad listing. This listing duration is light years longer than most other sites and renewals are free as well.

•Distance calculator. This function comes in handy if you’re concerned with locality.

These free online classified sites can be the ace up your sleeve, whether you’re just launching your home-based Internet retail operation or trying to shoot for the stars with an established business. Strap yourself into your chair and count down to ignition.

Dont be afraid you really can make money on the internet! Learning to develope consistant traffic for your products and services on the internet can be a daunting task for the internet “NEWBIE”. Getting those all important first sales to keep you going is crucial! People tend to quit real easy because they never receive any results or belief that what they are doing will work!

Please excuse my English, I am not very educated and I am not very good on the computer. My name is Richard weberg and this is my personal experience.

I started building my internet business about a year ago, it was really confusing! Every website would tell me somthing else, like if you dont use enzines or have a massive list you wont make any money! Every site I went to had some different philosophy, on how to make money on the internet. What I have found out from my experience is, it dosnt matter what you sell on the internet, you can sell anything! What matters is learning to develope a consistant flow of non stop traffic. Your traffic should come from many different advertising avenues.

I have used just about every kind of traffic program out their free and paid ones. Here is a list: auto traffic exchanges, manual traffic exchanges, start pages, pay per click search engines, I submitted my urls manually to all the search engines I could find, banner exchanges, link exchanges, viral traffic programs, posted to business forums, safelist. I tried to use every free traffic program I could find. I had a limited budget and couldnt afford alot for paid advertising. I did is much low cost paid advertising as I could! This may surprise some of you but I dont own my own website and I have never used an enzine and I dont have a massive list! This is exactly what I do

I started with a url rotator, and every day I will login by dial up and add 2 income urls plus 2 traffic producing urls to my rotator. Every Day I would do this, 7 Days a week for 3 months. I Never, Never considered I would fail.

I refuse to think I can fail at this. I was totally determined to earn an income on the internet. You see …I was unemployed, in the process of getting evicted from my apartment, my wife was on the brink of leaving me and I needed to build some form of personal wealth, to send my 3 sons to college. At this time, I was personally in debt and dead broke. I was motivated, but I am not one to whine about my financial difficulties. It took 3 months, but I had a whole bunch of urls on my Rotator, some for income and some to generate traffic.

Two Months Later …

In my mailbox, I received 22 CHECKS, each averaging $120.00. That’s $2,640.00 For That day. Every day after that I was receiving checks in the mail and in my paypal account, Now also my Stormpay account.
My Franchise Website is now earning over $25,000 a Month, My Supermall earns me about $8,000 a month all stores combined, and all my other income producing urls earn me another $14,000 a month.I do not judge the programs, I have no opinions, I simply placed it there, send traffic to it and allow it to earn me income. It’s building and growing now by leaps and bounds. Some are dead, but most is alive and that’s all I care about. The real trick I beleive to this internet thing is NOT GIVING UP AND POUNDING AS MUCH TRAFFIC TO YOUR URLS AS YOU CAN, I DONT CARE WETHER IT IS FREE OR PAID! It will pay off if you dont give up! You will learn as you go.

Here are two great traffic resources to get you started.

For a long time now business, commerce and law have been the main areas of study for students who wish to become successful in our modern materialistic society. Places like Harvard Business School were where so-called elite elements of human intelligence hoped to be trained so that they could then reach the highest ranks of status and wealth. Well, things are changing. This is because these people are now being outsourced. Presently, companies can get the same jobs done by people from India and Asia for one fifteenth of what it costs to rent an overpriced white collar American or European. The future no longer lies in these areas of financial process. The future successes now lie in ideas. The poor, starving, struggling artists are the kingpins of tomorrow. Creativity is now being seen as the desired quality for positive growth in any and every industry in our world.

Who cares about how good you know the systems of finance? The question now is: How are you going to innovate and create ideas that further society and incite others to participate in your areas of interest? Artists are now being sought after by businesses to produce imagery that inspires both investment and consumption. Idea creators are desired for their ingenuity and ability to change the ways in which society functions. We all know that the only constant in life is the fact that all things are in constant flux, perpetual change. So, how are you going to create changes that further society?

Half way through this article I realized that I had to go to the toilet, but after entering the lavatory found that toilet paper was non-existent. As I work for a web hosting company that is quite relaxed about these things, I decided to get a breath of fresh air and go down to the corporate supplier and buy some.

As I walked down the hot summer street with a package of 48 rolls of poo-wiping tree matter on my head, African style, I wondered if it might not be ironic that this crapping paper was sitting so close to my brain. Maybe I’m full of s*#t and creative people are always going to be thought of as people who just suck off the rest of society only to fulfill their unworldly whims. I don’t think so. Business graduates may have once been in a position of absolute authority, where they could charge as much as they want for the use of their special hard-to-come-by services. Now however, the tables have turned. Oh yes, society may still function with the whole capitalistic financial game, but can you tell me of ten accountants and lawyers that changed the face of the world. Can you?

Maybe you can. Maybe you’re one of those super-intelligent types that know everything about how humanity has evolved over the millennia. Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Theresa, Van Gogh, Picasso, Einstein, Newton, Edison, Socrates and Buddha: How many of these people who changed the world were business graduates? Creative ideas have always been intrinsic factors in creating momentous changes to social beliefs and systems on our world. I believe we are on a pendulum, and things are once again about to swing towards a time of inspiration and imagination. Even in the present money-driven social paradigm it looks like new ideas and ways of perception are going to be integral to one’s success. If we want to be a great part of the future human team, it’s time to once again open the right side of our brains and become balanced in our thinking processes. Am I full of crap, or full of inspiration? You be the judge.

Do you find yourself looking for a way to make some extra money? How about creating a website on something that everyone includesin their life, Music? The opportunities are endless and what’sgreat about it is that you can make money on it while you’reeating, sleeping, or just sitting around watching TV.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a lot of work in the beginning to geteverything started. Once you get your website built the way youwant it though, all that is left is maintaining it to keep it attip top shape. From there you’ll be making money off of it24/7. So, how do you get started and how do you make money offof it you may be wondering?

To start off you need to purchase a domain name, which is yourwebsite URL. You can do this at GoDaddy.com for a cheap priceof $9.20 per year. Now you have your website name, the nextstep is to pick a host for your website. This is where you willbuild your website. You can do this at GoDaddy.com starting at$3.95 per month, or choose to go to another hosting company asthere are many out there.

From there you are set to build your website, now how do youbegin making money off of it?

There are many ways to make money off of your website. One wayis to join affiliate programs through companies around theworld. How an affiliate program works is you join under thatcompany and refer people through your website to their website. Then, as people go to the companies website through yours, whatever the person buy’s you get a certain amount of money offof their purchase.

The amount made varies from company to company and it evenvaries among the different products sold. The big namecompanies you’ll often make less money off of, such as Best Buyand Circuit City you’ll make approximately 3-7% on all sales.Smaller companies some times offer more through their affiliateprograms, but people sometimes will opt to go to the well knowncompanies instead.

For a music website you’ll obviously want to join affiliateprograms dealing with entertainment of some sort. Bestbuy.comand CircuitCity.com are good ones to join, but can be difficultto get into when you’re just starting out.

One good one can befound at:

http://www.best-mp3-music-downloads.com/buy.html

Clickbank.com is an affiliate network that is extremely good tojoin as you instantly gain access to you choice of over 10,000digital products to sell on your website. There are ninecategories associated with clickbank.com, but categories tofocus on with a music website through clickbank.com would be funand entertainment and sports and recreation.

Where you find the registration form for the affiliate programsis on the companies’ homepage, and it is usually listed on thebottom of their homepage as affiliate program. When doing amusic website you don’t have to just stick with music affiliateprograms either. You can focus on entertainment as a whole thatway you can join affiliate programs for games, movies, postersand more.

Another way you can make money through affiliate programs istwo-tier programs. Two-tier programs are programs that you makemoney off of people signing up for the affiliate program throughyou. Not all affiliate programs offer two-tier programs, butthey are out there and signing up to affiliate programs withtwo-tier programs is to your benefit. A few entertainmenttwo-tier programs that I have joined include;

www.best-mp3-music-downloads.com/allposters.html

www.best-mp3-music-downloads.com/mp3dollars.html

The best thing with affiliate programs is that they are free. You make money off of selling companies’ products and it doesn’tcost you a thing to register under the company. Although world business is undergoing historic changes, the prevailing view of what constitutes business leadership is stuck in the past. Generally, business leaders view leadership as an order-giving process. The word “leadership” itself comes from old Norse root meaning “to make go.” Many leaders believe that they must “make” people go by ordering them to do things.

But today’s new business realities are requiring new kinds of leadership, leadership that has very little to do with order giving. Organizations are more competitive when leaders don’t make others go but instead have those others make themselves go — when employees are not ordered to do tasks but instead are in the frame of mind and heart that they want to do those tasks. That “want to” is the cutting edge of competitiveness.

Order-leadership in business has its roots in the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. “Order” comes from a Latin root meaning to arrange threads in a weaving woof. The captains of the Revolution dealt with the relatively uneducated country people who flocked to their factories by ordering them where, how, and when to work. The most efficient and effective production methods resulted from workers being “ordered” or ranked like threads in the woof of production lines. Refined and empowered by the Victorian commercial culture, with its patriarchal power structure and strong links to Prussian military organization, the culture of the order-giver leader reached its zenith in the United States after World War II.

During the post-war years, many U.S. businesses were like ocean liners plowing through relatively calm seas, their leaders, like liner captains and mates, running things by getting orders from superiors, giving orders to subordinates and making sure that those orders were carried out.

But today, with competition increasing dramatically, with the volume and velocity of information multiplying, with the pyramidal structures of order-giving businesses flattening, leaders need skills not akin to ocean liner piloting but white-water canoeing. Order leadership founders where lines of authority are blurred, information proliferates, markets rapidly changing, and employees are highly skilled and educated.

A new kind of leadership, a new vision of leadership is needed — leadership based on the principle that the leader doesn’t make others go by ordering them about but instead has them go by creating an organizational environment in which they prompt themselves to go.

This new leadership is: 1. Motivational. 2. Action-based. 3. Results-driven.

Motivational: Leaders do nothing more important than get results. But leaders can’t get results themselves. They need the people they lead to get results. And the best way for them to get results is not to order them but to motivate them to take action that produces results. However, the English language misconstrues motivation. English describes the act of motivation as something one person does to another person. Leaders can’t motivate anybody to do anything. We communicate — the people themselves motivate. They motivate themselves. Only they can motivate themselves. The motivators and the “motivatees” are the same people.

We engage in the new leadership when we recognize that we are motivating people to get results only when we set up an environment in which they are actively motivating themselves.

Action-based: A key aspect of the new leadership lies in the first two letters of the word motivation. Those letters — “mo” — are also found in the words “motion,” “momentum,” “motor,” “mobile,” etc. The words denote action — physical action. Motivation isn’t what people think or feel but physically do. To engage in the new leadership, leaders must constantly be challenging others to take physical action that leads to results.

Results-oriented: Motivated people are useless to a business. People taking action are useless to a business. Only those people who get results are useful. The thing is that people who are motivated and taking action are more likely to get results. Leaders must have a passion to achieve results. Not just results — but more results, faster results. They must permeate the culture of their organization with a more results faster esprit.

Clearly, many order leaders have a passion for results. But as to the new leadership, how people get results is as important as their getting those results. To get more-results-faster, the order leader demands that people run faster in the organizational gerbil wheel. But there is a limit to how fast and hard people can work before they burn out. The new leader, however, recognizes that to achieve more results faster on a continuous basis that people can’t simply speed up, work harder, and be straight-jacketed by tight controls. They must replenish their spirit and energies. They must slow down to develop and employ powerful processes, and they must challenge others to lead for results. The new leader’s effectiveness is not measured so much by his/her actions but by the effectiveness of the leadership activities he/she challenges others to engage in.

The recent emergence of interlocking global markets has stimulated a new vision of world commerce, a vision of a single global playing field. Leaders must match their business activities to the demands of that vision. But a corresponding new vision of leadership has not emerged.

Stuck with an outmoded vision of order leadership, today’s leaders are not seizing the full array of opportunities before them. When they begin to establish leadership that is not order-driven but is instead motivational, action-based and results-oriented, the world might not beat a path to their door but more importantly, they will beat paths to the doorsteps of the world.
